SafeguardingNICEguidelines.pdf

In 2012 CPSIG  developed statements on safeguarding, to be submitted to NICE for all relevant consultations.

1.  Paragraph for the introduction to all NICE guidelines

Safeguarding children - remember to consider the following:

  • Does the adult patient have child care responsibilities with which they need help?
  • "Think child" i.e. is the patient's ability to care for children impaired by their illness?
  • Does the patient have a condition or issues (e.g. mental health, substance and/or alcohol misuse, domestic violence, learning difficulty) that may impact upon their child?
  • Would this patient/family benefit from other support or monitoring hence a referral to social care?

2. Paragraph for the introduction to NICE guidelines that are specifically about children

Safeguarding children - remember to consider the following:

  • Child maltreatment is common
  • It presents in hospital and primary care and all health settings e.g. Accident and Emergency, In- patient, Out-patients, dentist, at home visit by health visitor
  •  Consider or suspect abuse as a contributory factor to or even a cause of the presentations described in these guidelines
  • Abuse may coexist with any of the conditions described
